Cookie Choices for This Atlas

Effective 6 February 2026. The editorial pages are designed to work without advertising or analytics cookies.

Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small values stored by a browser and sent with relevant requests. LocalStorage is a separate browser mechanism that can retain values on a device without sending them automatically with every page request. Both can be used for preferences, while tracking technologies can have wider privacy implications.

What the editorial pages use

The atlas’s own page scripts do not set cookies, write localStorage or sessionStorage, or load advertising and analytics services. Navigation, FAQ disclosures, scroll reveals and the contact preview do not require persistent storage. We do not use these features to build a profile of your reading.

Any separately supplied site-level consent controls should identify their preference storage and offer the choices applicable to the services they govern. Non-essential technologies must not be enabled before any consent required by law. Accepting optional technologies is not necessary to read this atlas.

The message tool is different from a cookie

The contact preview holds entered text in the current page. “Copy Message” asks the browser to put text on your clipboard. “Download Message” prepares a text file for your device. These actions do not send a message to us and are not cookies, but they can leave information on your device under your control.

Your browser may cache page resources, offer autofill or restore a previous page’s fields. Those browser features are distinct from the editorial scripts intentionally saving a draft. Be careful when using a shared computer.

Your controls

You can inspect or remove a site’s stored data through your browser’s privacy or site-settings panel. Browser controls may let you block cookies, clear local storage, manage clipboard permissions and disable form autofill. The names and effects of these settings vary by browser.

Clearing stored consent preferences can cause a site-level choice to be requested again. It does not delete a text file you downloaded or information already placed on your clipboard. Manage those separately through your device and applications.

External links and technical requests

Following an external link opens another website whose cookies and privacy practices are controlled by its operator. We use links rather than embedded third-party maps or videos. Ordinary page delivery can still involve server access records, which are explained in our Privacy notice.
