Reading the website
Delivering web pages involves technical information such as an IP address, requested page, browser information and request time. Hosting infrastructure may record this information in access or security logs. Where processed by us, it is used to deliver, secure and troubleshoot the service on the basis of our legitimate interests in operating a reliable website.
The site’s editorial code does not include advertising trackers, analytics scripts, account registration or third-party embedded media. Local images and styles are requested from this site. Following an external link takes you to another service with its own privacy practices.
The local message tool
Text entered in the contact tool is used in your browser to create a preview. The tool does not submit those fields to a server or intentionally store them in cookies or localStorage. Copying uses your device’s clipboard; downloading creates a plain-text file under your browser’s download settings. Your browser may independently offer autofill or restore form contents.
You control what happens after copying or downloading. Other applications may access clipboard content according to device permissions. Remove downloaded drafts and clear the clipboard if they contain information you do not want retained on a shared device.
If you send an email
We receive your email address, the name you provide, message content, attachments and associated email metadata. We use this information to assess enquiries, consider corrections, respond where appropriate and maintain relevant editorial records. Our usual legal basis is legitimate interests in managing correspondence and editorial accuracy. Legal obligations may require some records to be retained.
Do not send health records, identity documents, payment details or other sensitive information. We do not publish private correspondence or identify a contributor without an appropriate basis. Material you ask us to publish may require a separate discussion about attribution and permission.
Sharing and international processing
Hosting and email providers process technical data or correspondence as necessary to supply their services. Information may also be disclosed where legally required or necessary to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. We do not sell personal information. Where a restricted international transfer is involved, applicable data-protection safeguards are required.
Retention and security
Information is kept only as long as needed for its purpose, applicable legal duties or a relevant dispute. Routine correspondence is reviewed for deletion when it is no longer useful; source permissions and substantive correction records may need longer retention to support the publication. Security measures reduce risk, but no internet service or email channel can be guaranteed completely secure.
Your rights
Subject to applicable law and exemptions, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability of your personal information, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing depends on consent, you may withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. We may need proportionate information to verify a request.
Contact the editorial email above to exercise your rights. You may complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office or another competent supervisory authority. Please contact us if you would like us to address a concern first.
